The Southeast neighborhood of Indianapolis encompasses six
unique and distinctive neighborhoods: Bates Hendricks, Fletcher
Place, Fountain Square, Fountain Square South, The Southeast
Community Organization, and Irish Hill. This downtown area is
bordered by Washington Street on the North; Raymond Street on
the South; Sherman Drive and Keystone Avenue on the East; and
Madison Avenue on the West. The Southeast was home to
nearly 25,000 residents as of the 2000 Census. Of these
neighbors, one in four lives below the poverty level, creating
many needs and opportunities for support. But the Southeast is
rich in other ways, as its residents are committed to creating a
neighborhood that meets the needs of a variety of individuals.
This commitment is shown through the strong history of community
planning, as well as through participation at various community
meetings and advisory councils. Other positive aspects include
strong neighborhood associations that work as driving forces in
revitalizing the Southeast, as well as key community partners
like Southeast Community Services (SECS) and Southeast
Neighborhood Development (SEND). Since 1972, SECS has helped
increase self-sufficiency for hundreds of low-income residents
on the Southeast side. And SEND has invested over $35 million in
affordable housing, commercial renovation, youth development,
and greenspace improvements in the community. These investments
have made a vast difference in improving the Southeast by
raising property values, empowering residents, and attracting
businesses to the community. Along the way, the Southeast has
been fortunate to receive support from engaged corporate
partners in its midst.
Additionally, this is an area people like to visit. The
Fountain Square neighborhood recently became a Cultural District
and will be included as a leg on the Cultural Trail. The Wheeler
Arts Community, the Murphy Arts Center, and the historic
Fountain Square Theater, with its bowling alleys and
restaurants, continue to be major draws. |
