From Good Neighborhoods to Great!
Over the last 25 years, public and private partners have collaborated to generate many positive changes in Indianapolis neighborhoods. Individual success stories abound; yet, as a city, we have not revisited our overall system of support for community development activities since the early 1990s. We have reached a point at which we need a holistic approach to healthy community building that harnesses individual energy and community resources to help our neighborhoods go from good to great.

That is the goal of Great Indy Neighborhoods. Great Indy Neighborhoods is a renewed approach to community development activities across the city that promotes neighborhood-driven improvements. You know best what your immediate community needs. By giving you the support needed to assume more direct control over the face of your neighborhood, and by following up with implementation assistance, Great Indy Neighborhoods will help realize neighbor-driven dreams and build a neighbor-driven structure that will result in a greater feeling of community and a shared responsibility to maintain and build on community improvements.

Super Bowl and the Near Eastside: The Indianapolis Star recently ran a feature article highlighting revitalization efforts underway on the Near Eastside. An interactive multimedia map of the neighborhood describes the importance of eight projects representing some $94 million in investments. Some of those interviewed indicated that the area's crime rate and physical appearance will hinder significant change, regardless of the NFL's plan to build a $9 million indoor practice facility at Tech High School in conjunction with Indianapolis' 2012 Super Bowl bid. However, LISC Executive Director Bill Taft views the NFL's project as an opportunity to build support forwider efforts under way. "Reinvestment is a hopeful activity, and this is an opportunity to tell that story," says Taft. "The people there already have a vision, and if you give them more partners and tools, they can get that done."
